This seminar introduces students to qualitative research methods while examining the role of civil society and civic engagement in Regensburg. The course begins with foundational sessions on the research process, covering the development of research questions, the selection of appropriate methods, the conduct of fieldwork, and the analysis of qualitative data. Particular emphasis is placed on the use of interviews and focus groups.
In parallel with the acquisition of methodological skills, students will engage with contemporary debates on civil society and civic participation, critically reflecting on conceptual challenges and real-world controversies. The seminar encourages participants to consider the relationship between research and social transformation, situating civil society within broader political and cultural contexts.
As a research-action project, the seminar also provides the opportunity to apply acquired knowledge in practice. Working in small groups, students will conduct exploratory research projects in Regensburg, examining local forms of civic engagement and the work of civil society organizations through interviews and focus group discussions with relevant stakeholders. The process will be collaborative and interactive, supported by peer feedback and instructor’s supervision.
Finally, students will present their findings to local civil society actors and formulate concrete recommendations, thereby creating a direct link between academic inquiry and civic relevance. In this way, the seminar fosters both methodological competence and applied research skills while contributing to an informed understanding of civic life in Regensburg.
