The initial focus will be on German cultural diversity followed by other areas of the world. Themes will be:
• Stratification, cultural identity and perspectives
• Stereotyping and the role of media in reinforcing national stereotypes
• Models of (inter)cultural classification (Hofstede, Hall)
• Psychoanalysis (Riemann) and culture of remembrance
• Development of intercultural awareness (Thomas)
• Theoretical and practical approaches to critical situations
Assessment:
Based on analysis, discussions, and interactive exercises, this seminar raises students’ awareness of how culture is evolving and experienced and attempts to give insights into alternative cultural values and perspectives. Eventually, students will have to prepare a short presentation/film in English to be held in class on an intercultural topic of their own choice.
